Strategic Energy Planning
Strategic energy planning involves creating precise strategic initiatives whose combined effects will enable clients to reach renewable electricity and clean energy goals. Our approach is to reduce building electricity consumption with on-site generation, energy efficiency, and renewable thermal alternatives. After efficiency actions are mapped, we evaluate options to replace (or offset) all electricity that is fossil (or nuclear) powered, by developing renewable options such as physical plant community solar, or community wind options. Offsets such as carbon credits or renewable energy certificates are a second alternative depending on costs. The third phase in our approach focuses on building decarbonization via electrification; which may include replacing all building thermal energy sources with heat pump water heaters, solar-source heat pumps, or renewable fuels such as renewable gas (digester/landfill), or renewable diesel. For transportation decarbonization we determine timing (short-range, long-range) for practical stepping stones between partial electric vehicles and all-electric vehicles. |
Rate Design and Open ADR Strategies
Demonstrate an innovative rate design for community choice aggregation (CCA) programs which promotes accelerated deployment of Zero Net Energy (ZNE) residential microgrids and other Distributed Energy Resources, especially behind-the-meter storage. Innovative rate designs might include the following elements: Rate design scenarios, including customer impacts, grid impacts, and CCA revenue impacts; Dynamics between rate designs and the operations and optimization of the microgrids and Virtual Power Plants; Replicable methodology for CCA rate design and billing processes to support scaled adoption of ZNE Residential microgrids. |
