“Breakthrough ideas can make a big impression and run competitors right off the playing field, but when CU Boulder became the first athletic department to launch a green sports program, there was no competition. Years later, other colleges in the ACC, the Big 10 and the entire Pac-12 conference saw the value of green sports, but there was a problem. Green sports have been seen as a cost center, not a revenue center.
A veteran sports business professional, Rick George, was the athletic director of the year who led CU Boulder into the Pac-12, started the Buffalo's Green Sports Program, Ralphie's Green Stampede, and was the first AD to sign the UN Sports for Climate Action framework, an international standard followed by FIFA, the International Olympic Committee, and even the NBA. He's a leader and a business executive.
Our marketing team has built new revenues in the green sports category. We have seen Green Sports bring in substantial new revenues in a variety of different ways. We built that Ford practice facility as the first in the nation, a fully solar electric structure that produces more electricity than it uses, because it costs less to operate and because it pays off helping Ford showcase solar powered electric vehicles. This facility also helps showcase CU research and education and how students can come here for careers in areas they are passionate about. Research continues to show that almost two-thirds of prospective college students base their decision of where to go to college in part on their awareness of a campus's green programs and operations. As the first NCAA Division 1 sustainable athletics program, leadership actions like the Ford practice facility or the ball aluminum cup, showcase and send a message to students, the nation, and to brands that the entire CU campus offers them opportunities. Even NBA legend Bill Walton would tout Ralphie's Green Stampede again and again on national TV broadcasts every time he was here calling the Buffs basketball games.
[The athletic department here leads the nation in everything. They have zero waste, zero pesticides and herbicides, zero carbon emissions, zero...]
Now, the Do Good Do Well - Sustainable Business Plan will map green sports financial paths to new revenues for athletics and across campus. If we don't work together as a campus on this, we're walking away from money on the table.”
